Gurjot Sindhar was born on the 9th February 1986, grew up in Leigh-on-Sea and has been living in London since 2004.
She went to a private school, St. Michael's in Hadleigh and went on to study at Westcliff High School for Girls in...You guessed it, Westcliff! Here she continued her studies into the Sixth Form.
Though Gurjot always took a keen interest in the Arts at a young age, taking up professional singing lessons and learning to play the harmonium from the tender age of 6, she was unable to pursue her educational interest in Drama at GCSE standard.
Having felt the rush and excitement of performing in front of large audiences for religious functions every month from the age of 10, she knew that when she was performing, she was in her element and knew she had to explore this passion further. Taking the knock back of being unable to study Drama as a GCSE, she was adamant to take on the Arts at an A Level standard. As she progressed through her education and fuelled her passion for acting, by the time it came to University choices, she knew what she wanted to do.
Having made this decision in her heart, she was afraid of what her parents would say, knowing that they wished for her to go into an area of business management. Making one of the biggest decisions of her life was difficult enough, but proving to her parents she was good enough was a huge challenge. So she did the one thing that would prove she was making the right choice...and invited them to her final drama performance at Sixth Form. After this deep, disturbing and emotional production, she was hesitant to go up to her family during the interval that sat watching in the audience, and so avoided them.
After the performance had come to its end, and fuelled with a passion to take on acting further in her life, she went up to her family, head held high, slight fear in her eyes and looked at her mother. "So...what did you think?"
Her mother looked back at her without a smile. Without another word she pulled her into a tight embrace and Gurjot could hear the smile in her voice when she spoke.
"You have a great talent" she said. After pulling away, she held her daughters shoulders and smiled, tears shining in her eyes, "And I know you'll go far."
After that moment, she had the strength, not only from her passion for the Arts, but also from the love of her family to follow her dream.
Gurjot went on to study Drama Performance at Queen Marys University in London, obtaining a highly respectable 2.1 BA Honours and has been pursuing her acting dream with a stronger desire than ever before.
In her own words Gurjot describes acting as not only her passion but her strength.
"Growing up I went through life trying to prove myself to my family and relatives. It was always a case of being the best, doing the best and getting the best education. There were high expectations and being the youngest in the family, I was expected to be the best. Having faced bullying at a young age and competitiveness from relatives, my confidence was low and I never felt I really "fitted in".
I worked hard, achieved great grades but it was never enough. There was always something missing - like a part of me was not fully discovered...going through life and facing up to the trials and tribulations that it brought me, I found strength in the arts.
Singing was the first step that ignited my passion for the Arts and the flame has been burning ever since. Acting brought me my confidence and helped me stand up for myself when I needed it most.
It is not just a passion but it is a burning desire within.
It is my love, my strength, my passion and most of all, my life.
The saying goes that home is where the heart is. Well...my heart lies in acting and I can honestly say that I've never felt more at home than I do when I act."
